Stripe rust in wheat: monitoring, thresholds, and fungicide timing

Stripe rust can cut wheat yields by 10 to 50% in susceptible varieties. Knowing when to apply fungicide, and when not to, determines whether the spend is justified.

Stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici) is the most economically significant foliar disease in Australian winter cereals. It thrives in cool, moist conditions, spreading rapidly when night temperatures are between 2 and 15 degrees Celsius and leaf wetness persists. New virulent pathotypes have overcome resistance genes in many commercial varieties, making variety choice and active monitoring more important than ever.

Identifying stripe rust in the paddock

Stripe rust appears as yellow-orange pustules arranged in stripes along the leaf blade, aligned with the leaf veins. This striped pattern distinguishes it from leaf rust, which produces scattered round pustules, and stem rust, which produces larger brick-red pustules on stems and flag leaves.

Early infections appear as chlorotic flecks, which develop into the characteristic stripe pattern within a week to ten days in favourable conditions. Focus scouting effort on paddock low points, sheltered areas, and areas with high crop biomass where humidity is elevated.

Understanding variety ratings

NVT Fungicide Untreated (FUT) ratings from the national variety trials classify varieties from R (resistant) through MR, MS, to S and VS (very susceptible). Ratings are pathotype-specific, and new rust pathotypes can render an MR rating effectively obsolete within one to two seasons after emergence.

Check the current GRDC Stripe Rust Management Guide or your state's disease update service (Cesar Australia, DPIRD, NSW DPI) for the latest pathotype virulence map and revised variety ratings before each season. Do not rely on ratings from seed catalogues more than two years old.

Action thresholds and timing windows

High-risk varieties (MS-S-VS ratings):

Scout from first hollow stem (GS30). The intervention threshold is the appearance of any stripe rust in the paddock combined with a favourable weather forecast (cool nights, rainfall). Apply fungicide at flag leaf emergence (GS37-39) if disease is present. A second application at heading (GS55) is often warranted in susceptible varieties in wet seasons.

Moderate-risk varieties (MR-MS ratings):

The threshold is trace to 1% of tillers affected. Apply if disease is progressing and the crop is at or before flag leaf emergence. Spraying after grain fill is established has diminishing returns.

Resistant varieties (R-MR ratings):

Fungicide is rarely economic. Scout to confirm resistance has not been overcome by a new pathotype.

The most common economic mistake in stripe rust management is applying fungicide too late, after flag leaf is fully emerged and disease is widespread, rather than preventively at GS37-39. The second most common is applying to resistant varieties at low disease pressure.

Fungicide options and resistance awareness

Triazole fungicides (propiconazole, epoxiconazole, tebuconazole, prothioconazole) are the backbone of stripe rust control. SDHI fungicides (bixafen, fluxapyroxad) used in combination with triazoles provide broader disease control and should be considered in high-disease-pressure seasons.

Strobilurin resistance has been confirmed in Australian stripe rust populations. Avoid using strobilurin-only products for rust control. Always use combinations.

Check the label for:

  • Withholding period (WHP) before grazing or harvest
  • Maximum number of applications per season
  • Any plant-back restrictions

Economic case for treatment

A rough rule of thumb: stripe rust control is economic if the expected yield protection exceeds the fungicide cost divided by the expected grain price. At $400/t wheat and $25/ha fungicide + application cost, you need to protect at least 62 kg/ha of yield to break even. In an MS variety with visible disease pressure, that is almost always achievable.
